Chennai sucks in Pollution

Deepavali saw Chennai choking from toxic fumes. The city was smothered in a blanket of dense smog on Wednesday as Chennai recorded one of the highest levels of air pollution across India.

According to the Central Pollution Control Board’s (CPCB) data, the monitoring station at IIT recorded hazardous levels of particulate matter (PM) 2.5, hitting 936.69 μg/m3 between 11 and 11:59pm on Wednesday. CPCB’s monitoring station at Alandur touched a high of 837.78 μg/m3 between 9 and 9:59pm on Wednesday, while Manali in north Chennai, an industrial area, recorded a maximum PM 2.5 level of 999.99 μg/m3 for two hours between 12am and 1:59am on Thursday.

Incidentally, as per India’s Air Quality Index, the permissible level for PM 2.5 is between 0 and 60 μg/m3. Anything above 250 μg/m3 is categorised as “severe”. The air pollutant in Chennai was, therefore, more than 15 times India’s permissible limit.

But it’s not just CPCB’s air pollution data that is alarming*. A joint initiative to monitor air quality in Chennai by the Urban Sciences, Healthy Energy Initiative and Huma Lung Foundation also reveal that the spike in PM2.5 levels took place post 6pm on Wednesday. Their four monitoring stations are located in residential neighbourhoods like Besant Gardens in South Chennai and Anna Salai (Huma Lung Foundation) in Central Chennai and in industrial areas like North Chennai’s MKB Nagar, and Ennore

But what is particulate matter 2.5 and how is it harmful?

According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency, particulate matter 2.5 are “fine inhalable particles, with diameters that are generally 2.5 micrometers and smaller.” The source of PM 2.5 comes from vehicle exhausts, construction sites, anything that involves burning of fuel, wood, coal, oil etc and also from natural sources such forest fires, states the New York Department of Health.

Inhaling PM2.5 can cause severe respiratory issues and worsen existing medical conditions such as asthma and heart disease. In the short term, the New York Health Department observes, exposure to PM 2.5 can cause irritation to the eyes, nose, throat and lungs, besides coughing, sneezing, running nose and shortness of breath. In the long term, inhaling fine particulate matter can cause chronic bronchitis, reduced lung function and increased mortality from lung cancer and heart disease.

The most vulnerable are children, pregnant women and the elderly.

Speaking to TNM, environmental activist Shwetha Narayan says, “The air quality level was at severe – whether you are sitting in Besant Gardens or Ennore, the exposure to PM 2.5 is so lethal. What we witnessed is a concoction of noxious gases and heavy metals. The pollution was aggravated yesterday (Wednesday), but the air quality in Chennai is poor as it is.”

But just why did Chennai witness such toxic levels of air this Deepavali?

Shwetha explains, “Weather does play a role. If it is cloudy and not windy, there is chances of smog. But the consumption of crackers obviously went up this year.”

While she points to lack of awareness among people for Chennai's air quality turning hazardous, Shwetha argues that the fault lies with policymakers. “Unfortunately, policymakers only look at Delhi. This is a classic example, where you look at one city rather than the whole country. Before Diwali, they shut down power plants in Delhi and banned cracker sales. Why can’t they do that in Chennai and the rest of the country? From a public health point of view, what is the government doing to protect the vulnerable?”

Environmentalist Nityanand Jayaraman argues that the question of the city’s air pollution levels falls within the purview of multiple agencies in the state – including the Health Department, Chennai Corporation and the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board. While he notes that awareness in the past has led to dip in firecracker consumption during Deepavali, there were no campaigns this year.

“Awareness is closely linked to campaign. It needs to be reinforced. Several years ago, there was a firecracker dip and this coincided with government and NGO campaigns. This year there was nothing and that’s why there was a complete spike in air pollution,” says Nityanand.

But the key to bringing down air pollution levels in the city, the environmentalist notes, is not by advocating a ban on firecrackers. “There should not be a ban. People should realise and let go. We need to bring in a system of incentives – celebrating Diwali without crackers.”

*The reason for varying air pollution data from CPCB and the joint initiative is because the locations of the monitoring stations are different. Moreover, data varies also based on the monitoring equipment used.

Be aware...

5 way to trace lost phone:

so here is the first 5 way to trace through apps and general method

1. IMEI

Every smartphone has a unique IMEI number assigned to it and you can access it by dialing *#06#. Once your phone's 15-digit IMEI number is displayed, write it down and keep it safe for future reference. You can also retrieve the IMEI number by removing the battery. It is usually listed on a white sticker along with the phone's serial number.

When you lose your handset, you will need to launch a FIR with the police, attaching a copy of the IMEI number with it. Then give a copy of this to your service provider who can track the phone based on its unique ID number and meanwhile block the handset so that it cannot be used by anyone else. IMEI number helps to tracks the handset, even when the SIM is changed or the SIM card is not activated. Once the phone is traced, the police should be able to retrieve it.

2. Avast! mobile security

This free invisible security app brings twin security measures for your handset by providing - a mobile antivirus and mobile tracking/controls solution. What is great about the app is that its anti-theft component is invisible to thieves, and provides remote options (via web portal or SMS commands) for locating and recovering your phone. Time to say goodbye to 'lost' phones.

 3. Mobile chase-location tracker

This is another handy app to track your stolen or lost phone. This app checks when the pick-pocketer changes the SIM card and sends a a SMS in 5 minutes from the new SIM number to your number, which has been stored in the application. The SIM contains GPS location data or current location code to aid in trace.

4. Thief tracker

This one is our favorite. With Thief tracker app, you get to catch the 'thief' red handed. Any unsuccessful attempt to unlock your mobile will trigger this app to snap a picture from front camera and send you an email without the user even knowing it. However the app has some limitations - like it does not wipe data and an unsuccessful attempt is considered only when 4 dots in the pattern are selected.

5. Smart look

This software also clicks the pictures of the 'thief' - in fact three of them and, immediately e-mails it to you. It also comes equipped with a GPS continuous tracking system which is linked to the google map and also assists in tracing your lost or stolen phone.
